Departments > Irrigation > Chief Engineer (Nagarjuna Sagar Project) > Introduction

The multipurpose Nagarjunasagar Project is built on the river Krishna in the Nalgonda District. The main components of this irrigation project are a 409 feet high masonry dam flanked by earthen dams to a maximum height of 85 feet. This creates a lake with gross storage capacity of 408.24 TMC at +590.00 feet level, with two canals taking off from the reservoir at either flank.

The main benefits of this Project are:

  • Stabilise irrigation under the Krishna Delta System
  • Sufficient water supply has reached the suffering ayacut of tail end areas
  • Water has reached the tail end areas at initial stage itself, increasing the yield by about 5 to 10 bags per acre
