Genesis
Television was first introduced in India in 1959 as a UNESCO Aided Educational Project. It was an
experimental service designed to test the feasibility of using the medium as a vehicle for
communication development and education. First serious effort in this direction was made under the
project called SITE (Satellite Instructional Television Experiment) in 1975-76 wherein ETV received
a boost unprecedented anywhere in the world. ATS-6 loaned by USA was used for one year starting
from 1st August, 1975. The ground segment responsibilities were with ISRO and AIR.
Communication Technology was used to reach 2,340 remote villages in 6 clusters in 20 districts
spread over 6 States with a population nearly 45 millions. Andhra Pradesh was one of them. The
experiment demonstrated potentiality of ETV.
