The Office of the Director of Translations is in existence since the formation of ANDHRA PRADESH STATE on 1st November, 1956. In the former Composite state of Madras, the Department is known as THE TELUGU TRANSLATOR TO GOVERNMENT. After the formation of the State, it was called as the Office of the Senior Translator to Government. During the subsequent years, the name of the Department was changed to THE DIRECTOR OF TRANSLATIONS. Earlier this Department was under the administrative control of Education and Law Departments. The Director of Translations is presently under the administrative control of General Administration (General) Department of Secretariat.

The Director of Translations is a non-cadre post. Presently two wings i.e. Telugu and Urdu language are working in this Department. At present the Director of Translations is assisted by Four (4) Deputy Directors (Telugu) and Two (2) Deputy Directors (Urdu) along with other supporting staff. In each wing, the Deputy Director is assisted by Senior Translators and Junior Translators. There is a TRANSLATION CELL headed by a Deputy Director (Telugu) with supporting staff located at Secretariat under the administrative control of Director of Translations to translate the Cabinet meeting proceedings into Telugu. Its PABX No. is 3450111 Extn. 2621. During the Assembly Session the Translation Staff of the Directorate are exclusively working in the Translation Cell (Secretariat) itself, for the convenience of all Departments of Secretariat to get the matters translated quickly so as to enable them to place them before the Legislative Assembly.

There are no Subordinate Offices in the State working under the control of this Department. The Translation Department attends the Translation work related to the State Government only. It is the Principal Translation agency to the various Government Departments in the State. The Department will translate Codes, Manuals, Rules, Regulations, Notifications, State Election matters, Court matters received from various Police Stations, Governors' Address, Assembly Questions, S.N.Qs., Statements under Rule 74 and 304, Zero hours notices, Cut motions, Proposals, Implementation Reports of Assurances and Ordinances, Acts, Bills in the Urdu Section, besides Budget Demands along with Performance Budget and other day-to-day matters.

  • Further, this department will function round the clock during the Assembly sessions besides attending regular work.

The Translator is a person who translates matter from One Language to another. The translation from English to other languages requires the technical skills and the command over the Language on both versions to which it has to be translated. Hence, the post of Translator is a technical one. Mostly the matters to be translated from English to Telugu or Urdu, as the case may be. The State Government is making all its efforts to implement Telugu as an Official Language. As one of the State Government Departments the Office of the Director of Translations is fulfilling its role for the Development of Telugu as an Official Language so that the people of Andhra Pradesh could easily understand the Schemes and the programmes implemented by the State Government in their mother tongue, Telugu saying as "DESHA BASHA LANDU TELUGU LESSA".

The Office of the Director of Translations is presently located at H.No.5-4-10, J.N.Road, Behind Dak Sadan, Abids, Hyderabad - 500 001. The Phone Nos., are Director - 4745442, Deputy Directors - 4615170.

The Director of Translations undertakes the following work:
1. During Assembly Sessions:
  • L.A.Qs.

  • S.N.Qs., Call Attention motions.

  • Rule 74 Statements, and 304 Statements.

  • Budget Estimates/ Performance Budget.

  • Governor's Speech/Budget Speech.

  • Set of Staff deputed to Finance Department to attend Budgetary work.

  • A senior Translator is deputed regularly to attend Chief Minister's work during Assembly Session
