INTRODUCTION

The Office of the Director of Translations is in existence since the formation of ANDHRA PRADESH STATE on 1st November, 1956. In the former Composite state of Madras, the Department is known as THE TELUGU TRANSLATOR TO GOVERNMENT. After the formation of the State, it was called as the Office of the Senior Translator to Government. During the subsequent years, the name of the Department was changed to THE DIRECTOR OF TRANSLATIONS. Earlier this Department was under the administrative control of Education and Law Departments. The Director of Translations is presently under the administrative control of General Administration (General) Department of Secretariat.

The Director of Translations is a non-cadre post. Presently two wings i.e. Telugu and Urdu language are working in this Department. At present the Director of Translations is assisted by Four (4) Deputy Directors (Telugu) and Two (2) Deputy Directors (Urdu) along with other supporting staff. In each wing, the Deputy Director is assisted by Senior Translators and Junior Translators. There is a TRANSLATION CELL headed by a Deputy Director (Telugu) with supporting staff located at Secretariat under the administrative control of Director of Translations to translate the Cabinet meeting proceedings into Telugu. Its PABX No. is 3450111 Extn. 2621. During the Assembly Session the Translation Staff of the Directorate are exclusively working in the Translation Cell (Secretariat) itself, for the convenience of all Departments of Secretariat to get the matters translated quickly so as to enable them to place them before the Legislative Assembly.
