INTRODUCTION
The Civil Supplies Department was functioning as Hyderabad Commercial
Corporation in the erstwhile Hyderabad State from 1946 to 1952. In 1952, the
Civil Supplies Department was created and later on, it became part of the Board
of Revenue, a Member of which was designated as Commissioner of Civil Supplies.
The nomenclature of the Department was "Board of Revenue (Civil Supplies)". With
the abolition of the Board of Revenue in 1977, the Civil Supplies Department
gained separate entity and the Commissioner of Civil Supplies became the Head of
the Department and also given the Ex.Officio status as Secretary in the then
Food & Agriculture Department (presently the Consumer Affairs, Food and
Civil Supplies Department).
Originally, the Department was only a regulatory Department. Subsequently, its
activities have been diversified to include procurement of foodgrains under
Minimum Support Price (MSP) operations, rice distribution under subsidized rice
scheme, consumer affairs, price monitoring, distribution of LPG connections to
BPL women (Deepam Scheme) etc.
