The State of Andhra Pradesh has witnessed tremendous development in the Power Sector in the past four decades. The installed capacity rose from 213 MW to 8195 MW and from only 2496 villages electrified in 1960, the state has achieved 100% electrification today. The total number of consumers has risen from 2 Lakhs in 1960 to over 1 Crore. The Agricultural connections which were hardly 13, 000 then, rose to nearly 20 lakhs. The existing power plants registered impressive PLFs and regularly break records year after year.

The Power Sector operated till 1998 under the State owned undertaking, Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board which was formed under the provision of Supply Act, 1948. As a part of Power Sector Reforms, APSEB, the vertically integrated power utility, was unbundled in the first phase into Generation and Transmission Corporations viz. , APGENCO and APTRANSCO under AP Electricity Reforms Act, 1998. The Government of Andhra Pradesh vide G. O. Ms. NO. 9, Energy (Power-III) dated 29th January, 1999, laid down rules for the purpose of providing and giving effect to the transfer of assets, properties, liabilities, obligations, proceedings and personnel of APSEB to the successor entities. The objective of reform process is intended to improve customer focus, reduce losses, support institutional capacity building and provide greater accountability across the organisation.

Further, unbundling of APTRANSCO into APTRANSCO and 4 Distribution Companies under Second Transfer Scheme was notified by the Government vide G. O. Ms. No. 35, Energy (Power-III) dated 31st March, 2000. Under this Scheme, Distribution Companies with the following jurisdictions were formed:

  • Area I: Comprising of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari Districts (known as Eastern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited with Headquarters at Visakhapatnam)
  • Area II: Comprising of Krishna, Guntur, Nellore, Prakasam, Chittoor, and Cuddapah Districts (known as Southern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited with Headquarters at Tirupati)
  • Area III: Comprising of Ananthapur, Kurnool, Mahaboobnagar, Nalgonda, Medak and Ranga Reddy Districts (known as Central Power Distribution Company of AP Limited with Headquarters at Hyderabad)
  • Area IV: Comprising of Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nizamabad and Adilabad Districts (known as Northern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited with Headquarters at Warangal)



The Distribution Companies are established as wholly owned subsidiaries of AP TRANSCO and carry out distribution functions in their respective areas.

Objectives

The objectives of APTRANSCO, with its subsidiaries, are to:

  • Transmit Electrical Power to all corners of the State of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Distribute Electrical Power to all electricity consumers through respective distribution companies in a very congenial and user friendly environment.
