The Govt. of Andhra Pradesh has identified the following 3 indicators under Fisheries as Core (Economic) indicators.

They are:-
  • Code no. 35 Marine Fish Production
  • Code No. 36 Inland Fish Production
  • Code No. 37 Shrimp/ prawn production.

Among the functional indicators, 4 indicators are identified for monitoring closely. They are:-

  • Fish seed production in departmental farms in spawn stage and in fry stage
  • Disposal of fishery rights in tanks
  • Issue of licenses to fisherman in inland waters
  • Issue of licenses to marine fishing crafts.

The total fish and prawn production from marine and inland water sources has increased from 4. 11 lakh tonnes in 1998-99 to 5. 46 lakh tonnes in 1999-2000 and it is proposed to increase it further to 5. 80 lakh tonnes in 2000-2001.

The action plan for achieving the targets is as follows:

Fresh Water Fish Production

(Increase from 3. 80 lakh tonnes to 4. 00 lakh tonnes)

The important activities taken up are as follows.

  • Increasing fish seed production & stocking. The Dept. of Fisheries is supplying 31 Crores fish seed out of total production of 89 Crores including private sector. The fish seed production in departmental farms will be increased to 35 Crores this year. It is a seasonal activity. Proposed for sanction of revolving fund of Rs 40 lakhs.
  • Encouraging Fishermen to Stock appropriate size & Variety.
  • Taking up culture of alternative species.
  • Encouraging societies to stock fish seed adequately by leasing the tanks in time.
  • Disposal of Fishery wealth in tanks.
  • Issue of licenses in selected reservoirs.
  • Fish seed to be stocked to increase productivity (Rs 5 lakhs).

Marine Fish Production

  • Use of Satellite data for forecasting movement of Fish shoals.
  • Shore to vessel communication through radio towers on shore and VHF sets on boats. (1. 2 Crores)
  • Progressive Motorization of traditional crafts & modern FRP Crafts. (Rs 140 lakhs)
  • Operation of patrolling boats. (70 lakhs)
  • Imposing ban on fishing during breeding season for 45 days. (April-May)
  • Expediting construction of Fishing Harbour at Machilipatnam. (20 lakhs)
  • Promoting of pelagic (Shallow) fishing.

Brakish Water Prawn/Fish Production

(From 0. 32 Lakhs tonnes to 0. 40 lakhs tonnes)

  • Formatted of Aqua clubs for ensuring pollution free and environmental friendly Aqua culture.
  • No new sanctions of Brakish Water fish Culture will be given beyond 78, 700 Ha.
  • Proposing to establish disease diagnostic centres.
  • Talking up culture of alternative species like Seabass, Fresh water, Prawn, Crabs & Mullets.
  • Conducting of awareness camps for Coastal Aqua culture regulation Rs 4. 75 lakhs.
Welfare Of Fishermen
  • Provision of Group Insurance scheme for 1. 30 lakh Fishermen (RS. 23. 40 lakhs)
  • Provision of relief cum savings to Marine Fishermen to get livelihood during off season. (Rs. 14. 40 lakhs)
  • Provision of Houses for Fishermen (177. 20)
  • Provision of working capital to Fisher Women (Rs 10. 00 Lakhs)
  • Conducting disaster preparedness in the vulnerable fishermen villages
  • Coordination the activities of Research & Educational Institution
