India is one of the major Oilseeds producing country in the world and the main cultivated oilseeds are
Groundnut, Soyabean, Rape Seed, Mustard, Sunflower, Sessamum & Niger. The Oilseeds are grown mainly in
rainfed condition in marginal soils. The productivity of oilseeds in India is less than 1 tonn/hac.
comparing to 2.5 - 3.00 MTs. of advanced countries. In view of this, though large scale area is under
oilseeds cultivation self-sufficiency in edible oils and edible oil is being imported into the country
to bridge the gap between demand & supply.
In order to attain self-sufficiency in edible oils Govt. of India has taken up various steps to promote
the oilseeds cultivation in the country and also increasing the productivity of oilseeds. National Dairy
Development Board (NDDB) which is pioneer in achieving milk revolution in the country in cooperative
sector known as "Anand Pattern" has been entrusted to promote the oilseeds cultivation in the country on
the similar lines of Milk Project. NDDB has taken up the project in the year 1979 and selected 7 states
in the country for implementing the "Operation Golden Flow"
